Annnd….we’re off…finally sea-faring, moving steadily towards Gabriola Island at a good clip of about 6.5 knots. The sun is gracing our maiden voyage…the waters are calm…our trusty captain, Devin, is smiling at the helm, flanked by his first mate, Matt. As Tarran and Lynx prepare this evening’s meal, Syd is happily snapping shots of the unfolding scene, Travis is journaling quietly in the galley, and I…am uploading media as I contemplate the journey thus far, marveling at how far we’ve already traveled.

After an adventurous first week of story-worthy challenges, I feel we’ve earned this moment of smooth sailing. We’ve had quite the sequence of hiccups that delayed the setting of our sails. But our spirits remained high as we met every setback with a light-hearted determination, knowing we’d soon be aboard Andromeda, the beautiful sailboat that will be our home for the next couple weeks.

There has been an air of surreality as we’ve made our way between Vancouver, Roberts Creek, Salt Spring, Galiano and Thetis, each of us sharing a palpable sentiment of…’After so much dreaming, is this really happening?’ There is a sort of intoxicating newness…none of us have ever done anything quite like this before…it is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking at once. There is some undefinable, magical quality to this experience…this underlying feeling is that we are doing something really special that even we do not yet fully understand. Several times I have found myself thinking…’We could not have scripted this more perfectly.seatoseed-2 saltspring_dyptych

We’ve only just begun, but there has been so much wealth in the communities we’ve visited, such richness of character, both in the gardens and in the audience. I’ve enjoyed meandering through rows of vibrant veggies, munching delicious, raw kale while learning about the importance of nutrient-rich soil…hearing of the efforts being made to localize food systems…feeling humbled by the simultaneously simple and complex truths faced by those choosing to live off the land. There is a beautiful humility in that choice…a strength of character and generosity of spirit that leaves me feeling genuinely awe-inspired.

seatoseed-8Of course, this is a truly multi-faceted tour…an experimental mixing of music, food and culture. As engaging as the daytime tour has been, the sharing of music by nightfall has been equally intimate, complete with sing-alongs ‘round campfires…local musicians lending their sounds and farm children staying up way past their bedtimes to hear and sing with us.

For me, that has been the most endearing part of this adventure…the brilliant children I have shared playful moments with. This morning, upon waking at Jollity Farm on Thetis, I intended to spend some time in silent solitude, sketching a new mandala. However, I was quickly joined by two, incredibly bright young boys…Aidan, 7 and a half, and his brother, six year-old Cormack. They were genuinely intrigued by my colorful process, so I invited them to participate, allowing them to choose the colors. As I began making marks in their requested colors of orange and red, Aidan astutely commented that it looked like flames, reflecting the candles that had been our only light the evening before. Our shared art space was followed by the two of them taking turns playing music for us…our own mini-concert to accompany our lunch. I am so grateful for these priceless interactions…so inspired by these awesome, creative little beings and their amazing parents.

Now…as we move towards our next locale, I’ve got a lovely feeling. I suspect these communities will nourish and inspire us far more than we might have imagined. At the very least, we are making wonderful friends…of all ages…all walks of life…all, beautiful shapes and sizes. It’s an incredible honor to be aboard this ship…to be tasked with witnessing and honoring these places and getting to know the characters who populate them.

Now…it’s time to join my shipmates for our first sunset on the water. It is indescribably peaceful out there…
